HOW TO DO TREE TRANSPLANTING SUCCESSFULLY BY MODERN FARMS & GARDENS, MUMBAI.

( PUBLISHED IN HORTICULTURE WORLD )

The functions of shade trees are many. From earliest history down to our own civilization and generation the shade tree has always been the friend of human race. With its beauty and protective shelter it thrives for manís benefit. When we recall the worlds most beautiful cities, it is not so much the fine buildings or the broad avenues that linger our memory, but the wealth of trees which line their streets and beautify their lawns and parks. The trees set off and enhance the splendor of the works of artist and architect. The effect of green foliage is also soothing to the nervous system and tends to counteract the irritating effect of some of the other colors, especially that of red bricks buildings.

We, are proud of serving the fellow human being at bombay by providing them with our tree transplanting (berlapping) services for more than 4 decades. We share with you our successful track record of 40 years in this field.

NEED FOR TREE TRANSPLANTING

The need for a tree to be transplanted can occur due to various factors such as, to provide greenery in a barren area. To take with you your own trees which you have nursed for years, when you
shift your residence. Removing of trees which may be a hindrance while building houses, roads, bridges, and other buildings etc, replanting of trees which have fallen due to heavy wind.

SOME OF THE IMPORTANT ASPECTS WHICH HAVE TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION WHILE THE PROCESS OF TREE TRANSPLANTATION ARE DISCUSSED IN BRIEF HERE.

SOIL: planting of trees along road side, where the natural soil grading is disturbed and left with hardly any organic matter should be replaced with either organic matter or top soil rich in organic matter from some other area.

LOSS OF ROOTS: when trees are moved from one location to another some of the small root hairs, or feeding roots, are destroyed in the process. The loss of part of the root system means that less water can be supplied to the leaves. This will result in more or less of a check, or setback, in the growth of the tree. The length of time required for a tree to ree-establish the functions

TRANSPLANTING WITH BALL OF EARTH: trees with a trunk diameter of 6 inches or more should be transplanted with a ball of earth. The size of the ball of earth to move with a tree depends on the size of the tree. A ball of earth eight to ten times the diameter of the tree trunk should be moved with the tree. The depth of the ball of earth also varies with the size of the tree. For trees with a trunk diameter of a foot or more the depth of the ball of earth will be between 2 and 2.5 ft. Taking too small a proportion of the root system, especially in the case of large trees, will result in a high mortality rate.

BALANCING ROOT AND CROWN: in case of large trees at least half of the root system is destroyed in moving it to the new site. This results in lack of balance between the crown and the root system. This should be counteracted by trimming back some branches in the crown. In trees of any size this should be in the nature of a thinning out and not a mere stubbing back of the branches. This means the removal of a branch entirely by a clean cut close to the parent limb. Such a cut will be in line with the flow of sap and heal over in a comparatively short time.

PROTECTING OF ROOTS: during the process of transport of the tree the roots should be covered with canvas or gunny bags to protect the roots from getting dried. This should be removed before planting of the tree in the receiving pit.

This will encourage a rapid root development. No commercial fertilizer or fresh manure, or tree food should be placed in the hole at the time of planting . It may injure the growth of new roots before the tree becomes established. However application of some soil drenching fungicide and insecticide is advisable to prevent the attack of pest and diseases.

SCAFOLDING OF TREE: the tree which is supposed to be removed should be covered properly using wooden logs and gunny bags/old tyre tubes in order to prevent injury of the stem during the process of removal of tree using heavy iron strings and crane.Landscape Designers, Horticulturists, Contractors & Nursery Men, garden designers, Landscape Designers in mumbai maharashtra India, Horticulturists in mumbai maharashtra India, Contractors & Nursery Men in mumbai maharashtra India, garden designers in mumbai maharashtra India

PLACING /PLANTING THE TREE: the hole in which the tree is planted should almost be of the same size. Care must be taken that the roots are also planted in the same depth as it was in the original place. This will enable easier and faster establishment of the tree in its new place. The soil after filling should be tamped firmly around the roots to eliminate air pockets.

AFTER CARE MEASURES: the surface of the ground in which trees have been planted should be covered with a mulch of leaf to conserve the soil moisture loss. Frequent watering is the most important operation in the entire transplanting process. Generous amount of water should be given in the first year and till new sprouts come out confirming the survival of the tree. After the firm establishment of roots application of good fertilizer is recommended.

the cost incurred by public
contribution worth Rs.1.5 lac

Note:- As per our experience and observations the best survival rate can be achieved is to maintain the transplanted trees for a period of three years and preferably the transplanting should be done post monsoon period. The lower rate of survival is mainly due to the poor maintenance done by the user.
